Design Technology

Intent

At Godolphin Primary School, we believe that Design Technology is a dynamic and inspiring subject that empowers pupils to think creatively and critically to solve real-world problems. We encourage our students to use their imagination, work collaboratively, and develop practical solutions that respond to genuine needs, both their own and those of others. Our approach reflects our core values: to be kind in teamwork and evaluation, curious in questioning and exploring possibilities, and connected in understanding the wider impact of design on communities and the world around them.

Our Design Technology curriculum enables pupils to build a deep and transferable bank of knowledge, skills and subject-specific vocabulary. Through a carefully planned and well-resourced progression of learning, pupils develop confidence in generating, developing and communicating ideas through design and technology. We nurture creativity and innovation, while also fostering the ability to take risks, make informed decisions and evaluate effectively.

We actively seek to create purposeful cross-curricular links, embedding Design Technology within broader learning contexts. Links with subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, Computing and Art are deliberately planned to enrich learning and provide meaningful opportunities for application.

At Godolphin Primary School, Design Technology nurtures learners who are reflective, responsible and ready to shape the world with thoughtful, innovative solutions.

Implementation

Design and Technology is taught through the Kapow Primary mixed-age scheme of work, ensuring clear progression in skills, knowledge and subject-specific vocabulary across the school. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to meet National Curriculum requirements while supporting effective teaching in mixed-age classes.

Pupils follow the iterative design process of research, design, make and evaluate. They are encouraged to be curious learners who explore real-world problems, investigate existing products and ask thoughtful questions. Practical skills are explicitly taught, enabling pupils to use tools, materials and equipment safely and confidently.

Design and Technology is delivered through a combination of weekly lessons and blocked units, allowing time for deeper learning and practical application. Projects may be adapted to reflect our curriculum drivers: curious, kind & connected, our locality and the community in which we live, ensuring learning is meaningful, relevant and purposeful.

Collaboration and reflection are central to our approach. Pupils are taught to work kindly in teams, sharing ideas and giving constructive feedback, while developing resilience and confidence through evaluation and improvement.

Strong cross-curricular links are deliberately planned, particularly with mathematics, science, computing, history, geography and art. Learning is connected across subjects and to the wider world, helping pupils understand the impact of design and technology within everyday life and communities.

Ongoing formative assessment through observation, discussion and outcomes from practical work informs teaching and supports all learners to succeed. Through a progressive, flexible curriculum, Design and Technology at Godolphin Primary School develops curious, kind and connected designers, ready to solve problems creatively and responsibly.
